Sikorsky’s Raider: outrunning the Lynx.
If you are familiar at all with international military aviation, then you are surely somewhat familiar with the Westland Lynx, a high-speed British helicopter used for light utility, high-speed transport, anti-tank and armed reconnaissance roles. It had officially broken the record for fastest military rotary-winged aircraft after one such helicopter being recorded going 201 mph, or 324 km/h.
The Sikorsky S-97 Raider is the new kid on the block. With a rearward facing prop, you had better believe it’s going to fly fast and gun hard. Capable of carrying Hellfire missiles, 2.75in Unguided rockets, and an unnamed number of machine guns, the Raider is (according to the website) capable of reaching a top speed of 200 knots, or 237 mph. The Raider is also capable of carrying six soldiers in it’s “Assault” configuration, or automated munition systems in it’s Armed Reconnaissance configuration.
From what I’ve heard, it’s supposed to be directly competing to win a contract to replace the AH-6. Whether or not that’s true is yet to be determined. But their website specifically states that they are working with the US Army to meet their design requirements, and look forward to expanding their project to meet USMC, USN, and USAF standards as well.
